Marine pollution studies

Laboratory analysis

Possible chemical (hydrocarbon, heavy metals, etc.), biological (fecal and total coliforms, fecal streptococci, pathogens, etc.) and physical (warmth, murkiness) pollutants can be detected by means of water and sediment samples. The Sample collection is performed with Niskin bottles, Van Veen dredges and manually by divers. The analysis of these parameters is carried out in specialised laboratories.

Sample collection directly from the environment

Apart from laboratory analysis, we use ecosystem bio-indicators to detect any polluters and changes in biodiversity. These surveys are carried out through direct observation (autonomous diving) and sampling.

Environmental surveillance plans

Design and development of environmental surveillance plans, specific for each activity:

Port work
• Clouds of mud.
• Acoustic pollution.
• Emission of particle clouds.
Manipulation of dangerous and toxic substances (thermal power plants, refineries)
• Prevention of pollution dispersion. (e.g.: antipollution barriers)
Control of authorised dumping into the sea
• Surveillance of emissary dumping.
• Dumping of organic material from culture cages.
Dredging
• Prevention of clouds of mud due to dredging dumps.
